I'm Batman
Coming out of the shadows is the caped crusader himself, Batman (1989)
Batman was the first live action film for the dark knight and yes, everyone has their preferred Batman ranging from 1960s Adam West all the way to current day Ben Affleck, but yet this one is still remembered fondly.
The casting is practically flawless the talented Micheal Keaton surprising everyone with the serious tone Bruce Wayne while at the time Keaton was labeled as a comedic actor. The menacing Jack Nicholson and the manacle Joker, Nicholson acting is over the top, funny, and at times scary. His performance has shown how the threatening the joker could be if he came out of the pages of the comics. We also have the lovely Kim Basinger as Vicky Vale, Bruce's love interest, shes the gorgeous curious journalist that has a funny feeling about Bruce Wayne, and shell do anything t find out what it is.
At first glance we are put into a dark atmospheric crime driven city, a great depiction of Gotham City. Visuals are done by Tim Burton known for dark, and Gothic atmosphere, Burton brings the comics to life in this film. Some people may argue that it's not realistic enough, but the film is heavily inspired by the comics and fans of the caped crusader appreciate that feeling of a live action comic book. At the time this was a darker image of Batman especially compared to the Adam West's Batman show in the 60s with "POW' and "BAM" after every punch.
Next to talk about is the story telling. Any comic fan knows the origin story of Batman (His parents get shot in an alley after the theater), the film skips over that by making us think its Bruce's childhood when instead its actually another family and Batman shows up to confront the criminals to spread the word of his name and to strike fear into the corrupt. We don't get to see the origin of Batman, but instead we see the origin of the Joker. Inspired from the comic "The red hood" we see the Jack Napier's fall to become the clown prince of crime.
Not to mention every combination of the characters is present in the movie. Bruce Wayne vs Jack Napier, Batman vs Jack Napier, Bruce Wayne vs The Joker, and finally at the very end we get Batman vs The Joker. Burton also writes Napier is the criminal that kills Bruce's parents as a kid. Some like this idea that the Joker ties into Batman's Origin, others wished it was more faithful as in the comics its Joe Chill. Its debates like this in the film and other that keep it remembered and recognizable to this day.
Batman has come along way since the comics and as mentioned earlier we all have our favorite version of Batman. Well think of this, this film first started the Batman movies and have inspired other movies and shows like Batman Begins, The Dark knight, Batman the animated series. We also got to see Batman's other villains in future film, even a darker portrayal of the Joker by Heath Ledger. The point is whether or not it's your favorite the film may have inspired your favorite Batman and that's what this film is; an inspiration of how the Dark Knight started out and how he could be improved in future films.
"Oh, a little song, a little dance, Batman's head on a lance".
