1.....2.....Freddys coming for you......
With Halloween around the corner its only appropriate to talk about the king of nightmares himself: Freddy Krueger's Nightmare on Elm Street.
Nightmare on Elm Street is the first in the series and leaves quite an impression upon first viewing, making us never want to sleep.
The story's main focus of characters are Tina Gray (Amanda Wyss), Rod Lane (Jsu Garcia), Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp), and her parents Donald Thompson (John Saxon) her father, and Marge Thompson (Ronee Blakley) her mother, and Nancy's boyfriend Glen Lantz (Johnny Depp), and of course Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) .
Nightmare on Elm Street starts off with Tina being chased in a boiler room being chased by an airy figure with knives for fingers. She is almost over taken by the figure before she wakes up revealing to be a dream giving the audience the fear that sleeping can be fatal.
Nightmare on Elm Street fatalities are done in frightening ways and add new elements to horror. Before this we got the usual knife in the back, sliced up by a chain saw, by a masked killer. Some of the stereotypes are in this movie such as couples having sex, the parents and deputies who don't believe the teenagers, being alone, and an iconic weapon.
Ghost face has a knife, Micheal Myers also has a knife, Jason Voorhees has a machete, Leather face has a chainsaw, Freddy Krueger has his blade finger glove that he constructed. This gives the weapon more of a familiar reputation and is instantly recognizable. Through out the film Freddy scrapes his knifed fingers on railing making an "eeeeeeeee" sound to taunt his victims. Whenever we hear this in the dark we can't help but think Freddy is near.
Freddy himself isn't the only reason why we fear this movie as his kills and dream sequences are bizarre. Freddy taunts Nancy a number of times such as reaching his glove out of the tub when she's bathing, or when Nancy is asleep he turns the house into an image of his own design to strike fear into Nancy that she can't get away. When he kills Tina he is throwing her all over the room while using his gloves to slice up her body leaving terrifying four marks. When Rod is killed he wraps a bed sheet around his neck and hangs him giving the characters the impression he committed suicide, but the most remembered scene is Glen's death. Glen is sucked into his bed and his body explodes in a eruption of blood that covers the walls and ceiling in his remains.
The kills are impressive as they aren't just your average slice and dice murder. The story picks up when Nancy pick up on the pattern that she can bring things from her dream into reality when she pulls Freddy's hat out of her dream when she was holding it when she woke up.
Nancy sets up booby traps all over the house in different ways to trap Freddy. We fear for her because she is willing to fall asleep and put herself in harms way when this being is an unnatural force with a taste for blood. We the views are excited to see who will come out on top because at this point we either get 2 endings: Nancy comes out of top and has escaped her nightmare....for now, or we see Freddy finish her off in a bang because as Nancy is the star and he finds another group of kids to kill. No ending spoilers here.
But why are we afraid of Freddy, why does he stand out from all the other horror icons. Freddy uses dreams to get his victims. You have to be asleep for Freddy to get you and we all have to sleep sometime. You have the option to fight sleep and stay awake, but you are prolonging the inevitable and Freddy knows this. We will drive u insane until he takes your life or you take your own. If you saw this as a kid its not the monster under the bed you're thinking about, it's the one possibly waiting for your visit to his boiler room.
But you have nothing to worry about as its only a dream....until you hear:
1....2....Freddy's coming for you.....3....4....Better lock your door......5.....6.....Grab your crucifix....7.....8......Gonna stay up late.....9.....10......Never sleep again
