LET'S DANCE

Image
"Cut loose, footloose, kick off your Sunday shoes". The opening lyrics to a dance classic that could get almost everybody moving. This week we will be discussing 'Footloose". Footloose puts us in the shoes of Chicago city boy Ren McCormack (Kevin Bacon) when he moves to a small town of Beaumont and is almost instantly labeled as an outcast. Kevin isn't an average trouble maker, but is instead misunderstood for his interest in music and dancing, something relevant even in modern society.   Ren quickly befriends country boy Willard Hewitt (Chris Penn) and starts developing feelings towards rebellious girl Ariel Moore (Lori Singer) daughter of Shaw Moore (John Lithgow) who is the Reverend of the town. Giving the audience a clear indication of who we are going up against. Of course it's the older generation in the movie that sees him as a delinquent, while the kids and most of the teens look up to Ren as he is independent and is teaching them that ...

DETENTION

Image
Now think back to a time where you were just at the wrong place at the wrong time and the consequence was you being put in detention, sound familiar? The next film I will be talking about is The Breakfast Club We are put into a more relatable setting of a High School library where five students are spending their Saturday in detention. In this John Hughes classic we feel attached to these characters as they are completely different and we cant help but relate to at least one of them. Criminal: John Bender (Judd Nelson), princess: Claire Standish (Molly Ringwald), Brains: Brian Johnson (Anthony Micheal Hall), athlete: Andrew Clark (Emilio Estevez), and basket-case Allison Reynolds (Ally Sheedy), we can't help but picture ourselves in one of their shoes. Right off the bat about half of these characters are unlikable and, that's kind of the point. We either feel annoyed or angered by how they act to one another. For example when John is back talking to his strict vice pr...

North side Greasers

Image
Coming in at number 10 are the north side grease balls themselves, "The Outsiders" The Outsiders is a 1983 film that dates back even further to the 50s' with its style of denim jackets, converse, and greasy slicked back hair. The movie has a recognizable teen idol cast of Thomas Howell as Ponyboy Curtis, Matt Dillon as Dallas Winston, Ralph Macchio as Johnny Cade, Patrick Swayze as Darrel Curtis, Rob Lowe as Sodapop Curtis, Emilio Estevez as Two-Bit Matthews and Tom Cruise as Steve Randle. The plot surrounds the ongoing feud between two gangs of the low income greasers and the wealthy socs. An overused concept but, it’s star power helps it stand out as we already feel connected to these characters, thus making us root for the greasers from the very beginning. The film gives the audience drama right off the bat. We are given background on these characters, the Curtis family with the death of their parents, Johnny Cade being neglected at home, Dallas havin...

Introduction

Hey there, Are you ready to go back to a time when flashy colors were hip, weird hairstyles were cool, and denim was happening? Well, I'm not here to talk about fashion statement comebacks. I'm here to talk about those classic flicks that are still shown on TV, the ones that are still admired by  today's audience and we’ll be diving into exactly why that is. We’re taking a trip back 30 years into the past. Yes, we’re going back to the time in which Marty McFly made his first time traveling adventure; a time which gizmo accidentally caused mayhem, The Goonies discovered treasure, and the feud between the Greasers and the Socs was at it’s peak. That's right we're going to be revisiting the classic movies of the 80s. As a movie lover I want to discuss why these movies still reserve a special place in the hearts of many. You may have watched these movies at a young age or may have watched them for the first time recently. If lucky, maybe you got to experien...
